Branded Reel: An exploration of branded video

Takeaways

The production behind the creation of a branded reel has lead us to learn about the processes and requirements for video content. The project required the creation of several assets prior to shooting that would help us to create a strong basis for the format and setup required to create shots for the reel these also would create the framework for timing and movement. Knowing the timing and movement type of each action greatly assisted in both shooting and editing the video because it allows you to map out the best method for creating a shot and transitioning from it.

About Reese’s and Take 5

Reese’s is a sub company of the Hershey Company, a global snack company that has chips, chocolates and other snack foods. Reese’s is in charge of the distribution and sales of Reese’s products under the Hershey Company and has over 100 unique candy bars. The Hershey Company and Reese’s are international companies and can be found in 85 countries worldwide. Reese’s Take 5’s are a candy bar created by Reese’s that combines 5 flavors into one bar the flavors consist of Reese’s Peanut butter, peanuts, Pretzels, Caramel, and milk chocolate. This candy has low carbs and is OU-D certified meaning that the bar is kosher and can be enjoyed by more crowds.

The Challenge

In creating the reel we had to approach how we would match the sarcastic and playful style typically expressed in the Reese’s commercials for the Take 5 product as well as how we would approach creating the reel in a way that would allow the candy to reach a larger crowd of individuals. Additionally in Reese’s instagram posts there is one post about the take 5 on the Reese’s Take 5 page and 3 on the main account out of 357 posts. This leaves room for the creation of a branded reel for the product on instagram to hopefully expand the amount of viewers that this specific Reese’s product would receive.

What are “Reels”

Reels are a format for short-form video content typically presented in a vertical format. Reels have become a popular form of post on social media sites with Instagram, Tik Tok, Youtube and other platforms that have their own version of reels. This type of short-form content delivers the point of the video quickly making it a fast and engaging method of interaction with your audience.

The Solution Process

In starting to create the reel was the research phase where we looked into how Reese’s advertises and makes posts for their main product and translate those features into our Reel for the Reese’s Take 5. These features include the Reese’s color scheme, the orange gradient background, the San-serif font typeface, for that we found a similar free font that is very comparable to Reese’s commercial font, and the iconic bite that is used in Reese’s “not sorry” campaign.

We wanted to address the wide breadth of flavor that goes into a take five to make it an optimal snack for many cravings as well as it being quick since its all wrapped up in one bar. This led us to create a value proposition based off of the allure and ease of the product with clever relation to work being: Take Five, Enjoy It being a play on the product name as well as telling viewers to take a break to eat their product.

Results (Hypothetical)

Our methods led more individuals to know of the Take 5 on Reese’s Instagram platform from their original lack of coverage on that product. The advert informed crowds of how Take 5’s are a combinations of many desirable flavors and is able to fill many cravings, additionally the Reel matched the unapologetic vibe of Reese’s commercials.

Overall production time took 9 hours total

between purchasing materials, setting up and shooting shots and then editing and composing the reel for posting. elongated the time required for reel creation.

Critical Stimulus

After viewing reel examples, we were able to visualize how other products manage reels and made our approach to reels more thoroughly planned out after having visuals to see what works and what doesn’t in a general sense. We used this info and factored it into the Reese’s reel to get that floating product on a background look while also making the objects have clarity and consistency.

Storyboard for Video

We developed a medium fidelity storyboard to represent the motion and cues present in the video to assist in the creation of footage as well as the cues for content that is edited into the reel post shooting.

Digital Prototype

From the storyboard concept and the recorded footage we had shot we were able to create the full Reel with slight changes to the script, such as replacing the pull split of the take 5 with a bite shot similar to the iconic one seen in Reese’s #notsorry campaign. I though this would create a stronger reaction from the audience as well as strengthen the advertisements consistency to the main brand.

Additionally we created a smaller brand gif for a different type of post for instagram that could act as the shorter form of the reel while still carrying similar content.
