How an idea, and recycled household objects came together to make something more.

Introduction

RecycloBot is a conceptual subscription crate marketed towards younger audiences as an educational and creative activity. Each month RecycloBot features a new bot to build with an instructions sheet/ educational poster. The goal of the subscription is to spark young minds into creative visionaries with compassion for the environment.

The Project

-Create a bot out of recycled materials and catalog steps and supplies used in construction.

-Photograph the bot in a scenic and or interesting manner.

-Create branding and a logo for RecycloBot

-Design a poster using your image and add branding and facts to the graphic.

-Design an easy-to-follow instructions sheet with a step-by-step process of how to build the bot.

Building the Bot

When building the Recyclobot I went with a dragonfly for my inspiration based on inspiration of the shape of a clothespin and the texture and the texture and transparency of a plastic fork handle. By building the Recyclobot, I visualized how to create text and image-based steps for the instruction sheet.

Creating the logo

When creating the logo, I wanted to create something fun and child friendly while still portraying environmental values of the brand. I wanted my colors to branch nature and recycling with a green blue and brown combination.

My first logo used an isometric box with the name jumping out. The type being portrayed in different sizes and rotated helps to emphasize the fun lively feeling I strived for.

My second rendition added a robot face to the box to move towards a character that can be used as a personality. this helps develop a relationship between the audience and brand.

The third logo rendition took what was there, made it easier to read and recognize, changed the character to be cutesier and easier to modify for interaction in branding.

The final logo made the character better fit the motif and meld with the text in the logo.

The poster & instruction sheet

Using assets of the pieces I used I was able to create the dragonfly in illustrator which allowed me to use the assets to layout the instructions in an easy-to-follow manner. I maintained a beige and gray background for the parts to have high contrast. The character from the logo “let’s call him Recyclo Boy” is on the instructions sheet to give the child tips and praise as an extra kick of personality in the design.

The poster has a similar color scheme with a large title for the month’s bot as well as the logos and facts researched specific to the bot. The photo was taken by taking the dragonfly into a small bog at sunset, so it felt natural and at home in relation to the bot’s habitat.

Business card

I also created a business card to contact the designer of the monthly sheets that highlights a cardboard texture, the logo and contact info formatted like a packaging label. The back has Recyclo Boy presenting a QR code that would theoretically link you to the RecycloBot website.
